German inflation pressures to rise: ECB's Weidmann

LONDON, March 28 (Reuters) - European Central Bank Governing Council member Jens Weidmann said on Wednesday he expected more divergent economic developments across the euro zone for the next few years and that as a result German inflationary pressures would rise. "We will see inflationary pressures rise in Germany," he said in a Q&A session following a speech in London. However, he stressed the importance of the need for deficit countries to enact fiscal reform and said Spainunilaterally weakening the agreed fiscal targets was "not a good starting point". Weidmann, who is also president of the German Bundesbank, said he was worried about some of the short-term measures being used to fight the crisis as they"diminish market discipline". He also said German housing prices would have to be tackled by regulatory measures rather than through interest rates, adding that ECB monetary policy is increasingly geared towards countries where debt problems arevery large.
